Calving Kit Essentials: What Every Producer Should Have on Hand
December 02, 2025

Calving season can be one of the most rewarding—and challenging—times of the year for cattle producers. Having the right tools ready to go can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth delivery and a healthy start for every newborn calf.
"Be Prepared" is a motto to live by, especially during calving season. With that in mind, here are a few items that are essential to have on hand, plus some best-practice tips to consider:
- Clean, dry towels – Simple, but essential. Clean towels serve many purposes during the calving process, from drying off newborn calves to simulating breathing right after birth. I always have several of them on hand, and replace them as they become soiled.
- OB chains and handles – Critical tools for assisting with difficult births. Be sure to clean and dry them thoroughly after each use to prevent contamination and prolong their life.
- Stainless steel bucket – One of the most versatile tools in your kit. Use it to transport clean water, wash equipment, or mix solutions. Stainless steel is durable, easy to sanitize, and holds up well under repeated use.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) – Don’t forget about yourself. OB sleeves, gloves, and waterproof clothing are essential for hygiene and safety. Staying clean and dry helps protect you and your animal from contamination and infections.
- Additional calving supplies – Keep mild soap, obstetric lubricant, a calving head snare, and a calf jack readily available. These tools can make difficult deliveries more manageable and reduce stress on both cow and calf. Once the calf is on the ground, it’s time to focus on care and recovery. Be sure your kit includes:
- An esophageal tube feeder
- Clean bottles and nipples
- A calf blanket or heat lamp for cold-weather births
- Colostrum replacer
- Medications – Speak with your veterinarian to determine whether you should have antibiotics or anti-inflammatories on hand, in the case of difficult calvings.
A well-prepared calving kit won’t guarantee a perfect season, but it can ensure you’re ready for whatever comes your way. With these essentials on hand, you’ll be better equipped to support healthy births and strong starts for your calves.
